Welcome to the Library/Media Specialists Site!

Take the opportunity to collaborate with other Library Media Specialists across the state to further the Library Media Center program in your school. Join with other LMS to form Professional Learning Communities (PLC) to discuss and research topics of interest.

I would love to have suggestions for Adult books that are appropriate for senior high girls. Obviously no sex scenes in every chapter. They do read Jodi Picoult and Mary Higgins Clark but need some more ideas.

Our students like Nicholas Sparks books and a couple by James Patterson, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas and Sam's Letters to Jennifer.

I, too, would like to have ideas for certain groups of students. My niece once gave me a bookmark that was titled "If you like..., you'll also like...." This would be helpful when you have exhausted a specific author but would like books in the same genre. Could we work together to come up with some lists like this?
To answer Janet's question - My girls also like Nicholas Sparks, as well as Patricia Cornwell if you want to add some mystery to the mix. Janette Oke is always good for a wholesome historical fiction series.

What do you think about the Library/Media Specialists Day program that ESU 10 offers? What are some things you would like to change? What are some issues you would like to see addressed?

I especially like the sharing of ideas among peers. The sessions have been of value as well, but it is just refreshing to realize we are not alone in our struggles and successes. Networking with fellow media specialists gives everyone a chance to share and learn...I'm quite pleased with them to this point. I would like to know how other districts handle more than one learning center with one media specialist in charge with paras manning the centers in the absence of the the media specialist. As budgets get tighter we'll see more of this happening and if we're not already there we will be and it would be good to have suggestions on how to handle this situation.

Scholarship Information

Would you like to go to a conference or take a class and not have to pay? How about present at a conference and like to have your expenses covered? NEMA can help!

NEMA is currently accepting applications for the following scholarships: Continuing Education Scholarship, Workshop/Conference Scholarship, and Presenter Scholarship.

NLA: Louise A. Nixon Scholarship

Purpose The Louise A. Nixon Scholarship Fund was established to support students who pursue graduate level library education. Full-time and part-time students are eligible for this scholarship. Applicants must meet these Nebraska Library Association guidelines.

Applicant Requirements
1. Applicant must be accepted by an ALA-accredited graduate school of library/information science; OR , Applicant must be accepted by a graduate media program that meets the ALA/AASL curriculum guidelines within a unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

2. Applicant must meet one of the following criteria –

1. Resident of Nebraska for at least one year
2. Member of NLA for at least one year
3. Employee, past or present, of a Nebraska library for at least one year

3. Applicant will submit an official copy of his or her college transcript.

4. Applicant will submit two letters of recommendation.

5. Applicant will write a personal statement explaining

(1) her or his employment history;
(2) his or her employment expectations after graduation; and
(3) her or his expected graduation date.

6. Applicant will provide his or her estimated education expenses.

7. A personal interview may be requested by the Scholarship Committee.

Scholarship Conditions
1. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate the best potential for employment in Nebraska libraries after graduation.

2. One award per person is given. Scholarship applicants must deserve the award. Scholarships will not be awarded automatically if only one person applies.

3. Applications must be received by the NLA Scholarship Committee on or before April 15 th of the current year.

4. Scholarships will be paid directly to the educational institution. If the award exceeds the remaining tuition, the extra money can be used for school-related expenses.

Small Group PLC Topics

If you would like to learn more about a specific topic and how you can relate the topic to your library media center, then this is the place for you. You can sign up for one of the topics below or add suggestions of your own.

How the process works:

select a topic of interest
each topic can have 4-6 members to form the PLC
the PLC members exchange contact information and establish designated roles ( examples: leader, recorder, lead presenter, etc.)
member communication can be done via wiki, e-mail, in person, or any other format that will work for all members.
goals/objectives, a mission, and/or vision are established
a time-line is established
research and/or readings are conducted and shared with PLC members
activities, lessons, assessments, etc. are created and implemented in each member's LMC
results are shared with other members of the PLC
PLCs share information and results with other Library Media Specialists at a future ESU10 Library Media Specialist Day
